How it all began...
My passion for the spa industry started at the young age of 13. My mother, wanting to treat my sister to a special spa day for her sweet 16th birthday, decided to spoil us both to a facial and pedicure at an Ottawa spa. I remember going into the change room to put on my wrap and robe, only to come out and my wrap seemed much longer then my sisters. They hadn't advised me that it goes under your arms, not around your waist!
We were treated to facials first where our skin was cleansed, exfoliated, extracted and massaged. Then we had luxurious pedicures, with an herbal foot soak and perfect polish application. Leaving in our foam slippers we definitely walked out feeling like princesses.
Fast forward a few years and my collection of Wet'n'Wild nail polish couldn't be rivaled, with every colour under the sun from dark blue to yellow to electric orange. The early signs of an Aesthetican in the making.
Completing my Aesthetics and Cosmetology Course at Versailles Academy in 2003, I quickly learned that I really had only learned the basics. The world of Aesthetics was officially my oyster.
After working at a local supply shop (and learning every OPI colour by name), I began employment with Mahogany Salon and Spa as it prepared for opening. Spending just under 2 years there gaining knowledge and experience, I decided to move to Cobourg Ontario to seek out employment at one of the top spas in Canada, Ste. Anne's.
Ste. Anne's was a breath of fresh air. It brought me back to the goal of the service- relaxation. Set in the hills just North of Lake Ontario, not only was the scenery breath taking, but the spa itself was unlike anything I had ever experienced. A complete getaway for the guest. A true destination spa. I spent almost 2 years learning the treatments at Ste. Anne's and decided to take 5 weeks to do a bit of traveling.
Coming home, I wanted to stay close to Ottawa. I started employment with the SPA Ottawa, where I would spend the next 6 and a half years moving through the different behind the scenes divisions of running a spa. I managed orders and inventory, was an assistant manager, did graphic design and assisted with event planning, trained new staff, on top of building a loyal and dependable clientele.
But, we all need a change at some point in time! I left the SPA and started working at a small salon in Carp. While there I began a part time position with the sales rep, Sarah, for Eminence Organic Skin Care. Originally hired as an office assistant, things quickly changed as I took on a training role for Eastern Ontario and the Maritimes. My work became more full time as I began to travel and train, which really opened up a whole new area that I hadn't previously experienced.
Blush & Black...
Stopping in to visit my sister one day at Doree's Habit, we start chatting about a space up the street that was for rent. Next thing I knew an hour later we were with Liz, the sales agent, walking through 77b Little Bridge Street. Feeling the space was a smidgen too big to take on, Liz said that there was another unit, 77a Little Bridge Street and as we walked through the door into what is the current location, we knew this would be perfect!
Leaving Carp and then eventually parting ways with Eminence left me to pursue Blush & Black full time! A scary but gratifying endeavor that I have thoroughly enjoyed with all it's ups and downs.
Almonte is a beautiful little town, that welcomed me with arms (VERY) wide open! The need for a quality spa that offered full service Aesthetics had not yet been filled. My clients love the quaint, boutique style space. They look forward to seeing what new products are on the shelves. Can totally relax and enjoy their service. And ALWAYS love a visit with Millie, my resident dog-preneur and mascot Chihuahua.
We (Millie and I) look forward to taking you away from your daily stressors and offering you a place to relax, unwind and be pampered, without having to travel far or pay for parking. We hope to see you soon!
